Shubman Gill is an Indian cricketer who plays as an opening batsman for the Indian cricket team in all formats of the game. He was born on September 8, 1999, in Fazilka, Punjab, India. Gill made his debut for the Indian cricket team in January 2019 and has since then been a regular member of the squad.

Early Life and Domestic Career:

Shubman Gill was born into a Punjabi family in Fazilka, Punjab. His father, Lakhwinder Singh, is a farmer, and his mother’s name is Keart Gill. From a young age, Gill showed a keen interest in cricket and started playing the game at the age of three. He honed his skills at the Punjab Cricket Association’s (PCA) academy in Mohali, where he trained under the watchful eyes of coach Sukhwinder Singh.

Gill started his domestic career with Punjab in the 2017-18 season and made an immediate impact. In his first match for Punjab, he scored a century against Bengal in the semi-finals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He followed it up with another century in the final against Delhi, which helped Punjab win the tournament.

In the same season, Gill also made his first-class debut for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy. He scored a half-century on debut and went on to score 129 runs in his second match. Gill ended the season with 635 runs in 10 matches, including two centuries and three half-centuries, at an average of 48.84.

International Career:

Shubman Gill made his international debut for India in January 2019 in the fourth test match against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). He scored 50 runs in the second innings, becoming the youngest Indian opener to score a half-century on debut in Test cricket.

Gill’s impressive performance in the domestic circuit earned him a place in India’s squad for the 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa. He was appointed as the vice-captain of the team and played a crucial role in India’s title-winning campaign. Gill finished as the tournament’s leading run-scorer, with 372 runs in six matches, at an average of 124.00.

Gill’s consistent performances in domestic cricket and the Under-19 World Cup earned him a call-up to India’s ODI squad for the tour of New Zealand in early 2020. However, he did not get a chance to play in the series. Gill made his T20I debut for India in January 2020, against New Zealand in Auckland. He scored 11 runs in his debut match.

Gill’s breakthrough moment in international cricket came in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia in 2020-21. He was drafted into the Indian team for the third Test match in Sydney and scored a gritty 50 in the second innings. Gill followed it up with an impressive 91 in the fourth Test match in Brisbane, which helped India chase down a target of 328 and win the series 2-1. Gill’s performance in the series earned him widespread praise, and he was named as the Player of the Series.

Gill has since then become a regular member of India’s Test team and has played some crucial innings for the team. He scored 83 in the second innings of the second Test against England in Chennai in 2021, which helped India win the match and level the series. Gill was also part of India’s squad for the 2021 ICC World Test Championship Final against New Zealand, where he scored 28 and 8 in the two innings.
