Odyssey – Definition and Meaning

Ten years have been since the collapse of Troy The Greek hero Odysseus hasn’t returned to his kingdom of Ithaca. A large and violent crowd of suitors who taken over Odysseus’s palace, and pillaged his property continue to pursue Odysseus’s wife Penelope. Penelope has remained loyal to Odysseus. Prince Telemachus is Odysseus’s son. He would like to throw the gang out, but he doesn’t have the courage or knowledge to stand up to against them. One of the lovers, Antinous, plans to murder the prince, making him the sole opponent to their control over the palace.

In the shadows of those who would love to marry, Odysseus is alive. The gorgeous Nymph Calypso who is possessed by his love for his life and his family, has imprisoned the nymph on her island, Ogygia. He wants to go back to his family and wife however, he is without a ship or crew to assist him get out. As Gods and Goddesses from Mount Olympus debate Odysseus’s future, Athena, Odysseus’s strongest patron among gods, is determined to help Telemachus. As if she were an acquaintance from the Prince’s great-grandfather Laertes she persuades the prince to convene an gathering, where he scolds the potential suitors. Athena is also preparing him for a grand trip through Pylos and Sparta and where the King Nestor and Menelaus, Odysseus’s friends during the conflict, tell them of the fact that Odysseus remains alive, and stranded on the island of Calypso. Telemachus is planning to return to his home, and, once returning to Ithaca, Antinous and the other suitors plot an ambush that will behead him once he gets to the port.

The Odyssey is believed to be the work of the Greek poet Homer, The Odyssey is believed to have been composed around the time of 8 century BC. The text was later transliterated to English in 1615 by George Chapman in 1615. In it, the author describes the adventures of Odysseus the tale unfolds over a period of 10 years in which he journeys home after the Trojan conflict and the defeat of Troy. On his way, he comes across numerous strange countries that include those of the Cyclops as well as The Sirens and Lotus eaters. After a decade of traveling around the world and being presumed dead for a long time after which he is returned to Ithaca and is joined by the wife Penelope and his son Telemachus.
