Giorgia Meloni is an Italian politician who has been serving as the prime minister of Italy since 22 October 2022, the first woman to hold this position.
Early Life and Political Beginnings
Giorgia Meloni was born on January 15, 1977, in Rome, Italy. She grew up in a working-class family and developed an early interest in politics. At the age of 15, she joined the Youth Front, the youth wing of the Italian Social Movement (MSI), a neo-fascist political party.
In 1992, Meloni entered the world of journalism and worked as a reporter for several Italian television channels. She also became involved in student politics and was elected president of the Youth Action Front (Fronte della Gioventù d’Azione), a youth movement affiliated with the MSI.
Rise to Prominence
In 2006, Meloni was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Italian Parliament. She represented the National Alliance, a successor party to the MSI. In the 2008 general election, Meloni was appointed Minister for Youth and Sports in Silvio Berlusconi’s government. At the age of 31, she was the youngest minister in Italian history.
During her time as Minister for Youth and Sports, Meloni implemented several policies aimed at promoting youth participation in sports and culture. She also oversaw the organization of the 2009 Summer Universiade in Belgrade, Serbia.
Formation of Brothers of Italy
In 2012, Meloni co-founded Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia), a right-wing political party with roots in the Italian Social Movement. She became the party’s president and led it to a significant increase in support in the 2018 general election.
Brothers of Italy is a nationalist and conservative party that advocates for strong borders, lower taxes, and traditional family values. It also has a strong Eurosceptic stance and opposes further integration of the European Union.
Prime Minister of Italy
In the 2022 general election, Brothers of Italy emerged as the largest party in the center-right coalition. Meloni was appointed Prime Minister on October 22, 2022, becoming the first woman to hold this position in Italy.
